Guest lecture with Uma Ranganathan

Compositional Styles in Carnatic Music: The Trinity and Beyond

This lecture-demonstration delves into the creative genius of the Carnatic Trinity—Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Syama Sastri—and their profound influence on the architecture of Carnatic compositions. Through live musical examples, it unpacks how these composers uniquely employed ragatala, lyrical phrasing, and sangati development to embody devotion, scholarship, and emotional depth. There will also be brief coverage of some other composers to illustrate varieties of approaches. The session invites listeners to hear the kriti not just as a song, but as an evolving expression of artistic thought.
