Application Guidelines

1. Overview

Application for the participation in spring school “Language and Music in Cognition” is now open. Those who wish to participate in the spring school must submit a CV and a motivation letter via the online application form (see the link below). Successful applicants will receive a notification of acceptance by mid December 2018. Applicants are also invited to submit an abstract for poster presentation (optional). Notifications regarding the poster presentations will also be sent by mid December. The spring school is open for Bachelor and Master students, PhD students, and Post-doc researchers. Participation in the spring school is free of charge.

2. Submission Guidelines

The following documents should be submitted via the online application form to apply for participation in the spring school:

Motivation Letter (Obligatory, in .pdf)
The motivation letter should contain a concise description on why you want to participate in the spring school. It should also briefly describe your academic background and interests, and explain how topics or lectures of the spring school are of particular interest to you. The motivation letter should not exceed one A4 page and it should be uploaded as a .pdf file.

CV (Obligatory, in .pdf)
Applicants must also submit a CV including information on the research/study area of the applicant. Experiences in relevant research techniques may also be included. The CV should not be longer than two A4 pages and it should be uploaded as a .pdf file.

Poster Abstract (Optional, in .pdf)
Those who wish to present their own work at our poster presentation are invited to submit an abstract of their poster presentation when they apply for participation. The topic of research should be relevant to at least one of the areas the spring school focuses on. Alternatively, it can also be a study concerning the cognition of language and/or music. The abstract should not exceed 300 words (excluding references) and it should follow the standard format of APA style 6th edition guidelines. The abstract should be uploaded as a .pdf file.

4. Selection procedure
In case there are multiple competing applicants, Bachelor and Master students will have priority over the senior applicants. Applicants who submit an abstract for the poster presentation will also be prioritized. This Spring School is open for students and researchers with various backgrounds, and we place more emphasis on the motivation letter than the CV or relevance of research areas and skills.

5. Important Dates

  • Application deadline (Motivation letter (obligatory), CV (obligatory), and poster abstract (optional)): November 30th, 2018 23:59 (UTC+1, Central European Time)
  • Announcement of acceptance (participation and poster presentation): Mid December 2018
  • Confirmation of the attendance by accepted applicants: End December 2018
  • Spring School on Language and Music in Cognition: February 2nd - 8th, 2019

6. Participation Fee

Participation in the spring school “Language, Music, and Cognition” is free of charge.
Participation in social events (lunch, social dinner and excursion to Cologne city) could be subject to additional fees. A questionnaire regarding the participation in the social events will be conducted after the announcement of acceptance.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide any travel fundings. Suggestions regarding (budget/low-cost) accommodations will be listed on the “Practical Information” page soon.
