The Rhenish Music Archive Cologne
The Rhenish Music Archive at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Cologne was founded in the 1950s by Karl Gustav Fellerer. It contains materials on the history of music in the northern Rhineland from the 1920s to the present day.
An extensive card catalog provides information on almost all musicians who were publicly active during this period: Conductors, orchestral and choral musicians as well as soloists and music teachers are all listed here. The entries refer to the relevant literature that can be found in the archive and in the institute's library on the person in question.
In addition, the archive contains a unique collection of program booklets and magazine clippings on concerts, opera and church music performances in the Rhineland. These documents are generally not collected by other libraries. This means that concert life in the Rhineland can be documented almost completely.
A reference library on the subject of "Music in the Rhineland" supplements the collection, for example the complete "Kölner Beiträge zur Musikforschung" and the "Mitteilungen der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Rheinische Musikgeschichte".
The Rhenish Music Archive is administered by the professors of Historical Musicology and the librarian Julia Schuster (julia.schuster@uni-koeln.de), who can be contacted by anyone interested.
